From the president: September 2018

From the president

Editor's note: Each month GAL Board president will be sharing her thoughts with you, our GAL community. We'd love to hear your thoughts on these topics too, either on our website or on our Facebook page.

As my family and I were driving home from brunch yesterday, my husband pointed out a small patch of leaves that have begun their transition to fall colors. As much as its beauty, mixed with the briskness in the air, brought me joy, I was also left with a small sense of sadness about bidding farewell to what was an amazing summer here in Glen Lake. With lack of school responsibilities comes a freedom to explore the outdoors, stay out past dark chasing the fire flies and enjoy the gifts that nature brings. Personally, this past summer was one of new experiences and growth; one that brought me back to a community and an organization that means so much to me.

As my first season as GAL Board President, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to meet and interact with so many families in the GAL community, filled with incredibly supportive players, parents and board members. With the season came a great year of growth for the league; incorporating new and old GAL Board of Director members into the almost 52 year tradition of girls slow pitch softball here in Glen Lake. We look forward to an even more successful 2019 season.

With the changing of the season upon on us, and winter on the way, I for one want to hold onto the warmth as long as possible. So let’s celebrate the fall!

On Saturday, September 15 at 4 pm, we will be hosting a SKILLS AND DRILLS event at the Optimist Field. All children, ages four and up are welcome to come and get some practice in fielding, batting, pitching and throwing. It's a great chance for our community to come together again and for all players in all divisions to practice and play together.

And what better way to celebrate the last warm days of the season with a movie?! Starting at 6:30 pm, we will be screening the movie The Sandlot on the field! So grab your blankets, grab your neighbors and let’s pack The Optimist field full of our amazing community.

Lastly, while our Board of Directors is strong, we could still use some help. Currently, we have openings for:

  • Vice President
  • Umpire Coordinator and
  • Board Members at Large.

On Saturday, we will have board members available to answer questions about these critical positions. Please stop one of us and learn about the commitment and the value being a volunteer with GAL can bring.

I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday. If you cannot attend, I wish you the very best with the first few weeks of school and the budding fall. Don’t forget to stop and smell the leaves. It is the most wonderful time of the year!

All my best,

Shannon DiMarco

GAL Board President
